Duolingo Max Review (February 2025): Is It Worth The Cost?

It is no secret that AI has come to stay and hold a significant position in the present era. Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the world with some amazing applications.

It has also begun to seep its roots into the education sector. One of the best examples is Duolingo Max.

Duolingo has multiple subscriptions, but Duolingo Max only has AI features. Though it sounds amazing is it as great as this sounds? Is Duolingo Max any good? Will it help you to become fluent in your favorite language? All these and much more will be addressed in this Duolingo Max Review.

Without any further ado, let’s get started:

What is Duolingo Max?

Duolingo Max is a subscription that was launched in early 2023.

With this subscription, they added a couple of AI features using OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology to provide a personalized and effective language-learning experience.

Duolingo Max has unveiled two flagship AI features such as the ‘Explain My Answer’ and ‘Roleplay’.

To help you understand what these features are all about, we have explained them in detail:

Explain My Answer:

The ‘Explain My Answer’ feature in Duolingo Max allows students to check their responses.

All they need to do is tap a button to chat with Duo who is Duolingo’s mascot and get a clear explanation for why their answer was correct or incorrect.

It also allows the students to request examples or further clarification. To learn more about Explain My Answer, click on the link.

Roleplay Feature:

This feature puts learners in real-life conversation scenarios with interactive AI-based characters in the app.

Users can practice real-world conversation skills in the app, for example, they can order coffee in French from Oscar.

He will ask you questions like:

  • What do you want to order?
  • Would you like anything else?
  • How would you like to pay?

You will have to respond to the questions in either written or spoken French. Each response has a set number of words to use. The more words you use, the higher your score.

If your answer makes sense, the conversation will continue and if it doesn’t, Duolingo will correct you and show you where you’ve gone wrong.

The other features that you get are a cool, futuristic color scheme, unlimited hearts, and unlimited legendary levels with some unlimited challenges that are timed.

You also get a monthly repair streak and the best is the no ads to disturb your learning process.

Duolingo Max Drawbacks

Some of the drawbacks of Duolingo Max is that it gives users feedback on the answers they provide.

However, the explanations are somehow incomplete and the user is expected to figure out things, which they do most of the time through trial and error.

They must try to give users some detailed explanations on grammar, conjugations, tenses, moods, and more.

The AI is flexible and responsive as it reacts to things you say, and even picks the different tones you take.

The Spanish and French courses have many Roleplays and they can be reattempted as often as you like.

However, Roleplay cannot replace real-life interaction. Despite the hints, the early scenarios are also quite challenging for beginners.

On the other hand, Explain My Answer,  too explains one part of the answer and you cannot ask your questions but select from a set of three responses: yes, no, and show me an example.

Some more drawbacks are that If you’re learning anything other than Spanish or French then Duolingo Max is of no use to you and it is quite expensive.

If you are paying more for this feature then you also expect some new features more language courses and more to attract users.

How Much Does Duolingo Max Cost?

Duolingo Max has an Individual Plan and a Family Plan

The Individual Plan costs $168 a year, but if you pay monthly then it costs $29.99 per month.

The Family Plan allows users to share the subscription with five other users. It costs $240 for the year.

Conclusion

Although Duolingo Max helps study French and Spanish, it does not help with reading strategically, writing notes, researching, and more.

Now comes the question uppermost in mind. Should you subscribe to Duolingo Max?

Well if you can afford the subscription, are interested in learning languages, and daily user you may opt for it. The decision depends on the individual.
