What Are Hearts on Duolingo?
Hearts on Duolingo are like lifelines, a user will start with a maximum of 5 hearts and lose a heart for each mistake.
Duolingo uses a heart system to instill accuracy in language learning.Â
Each mistake costs you a heart and if all the heart is lost, you will not be able to complete the lesson.
Users could regain hearts through practice exercises, watching ads, or spending gems and more.
1. Practice Exercises
- To restore a lost heart, practice previous material or lessons.
- Tap on the Hearts icon.
- Next, tap on Practice To Earn Hearts.
- For each lesson you practice, one heart will be restored.
- That’s it.

2. Watch ads
After completing a practice session, you will have a heart unlocked. You can then watch an ad to add some more hearts.
3. Spend Gems
As hearts refill every 5 hours, a total of five Hearts will be restored within 25 hours. You can also refill hearts by spending Gems.
4. Subscribe to Super Duolingo
- Open your Duolingo app.
- Tap on the Super Duo icon.
- Click on the Unlimited Hearts and turn it on.
- That’s it.

- Open Duolingo app.
- Go to the Settings menu.
- Choose ‘Duolingo for Schools‘.
