Duolingo is a popular language learning app that is being accessed by more than 500 million learners worldwide.
Learners can access 40+ languages through bite-sized lessons that make learning fun.
Duolingo is creating waves due to its new internship program called Thrive.
Thrive is a summer internship program at Duolingo for second-year students that lasts for 10 weeks.
These students are usually from communities underrepresented in tech.
Thrive allows them to develop their technical skills and experience a working atmosphere to prepare them for their future.

Thrive Program Unique Elements

Here are some core elements that form the base of the Duolingo Thrive Program.
1. Hootcamp
It is a series of interactive courses that are being led by the Duos.
The course introduces the interns to the basics of software engineering.
The best examples of Hootcamp courses are Systems Architecture, Metrics, Testing, and more.
2. Group projects
The second element helps Thrive Interns develop projects by collaborating.
The Hootcamp provides them with the tools and skills to build a group project.

Notably, Duolingo interns are divided into two groups of four. They have a Duolingo Software Engineer called a Thrive Advisor as their leader.
Each group is integrated into Duolingo product teams. They work on projects, like:
- GoodStories — It is a personalized Duolingo Stories search feature.
- DuoHoot — It is a player vs. player lesson type.
The projects are then presented to Duolingo.
Mentorship
Thrive Interns also have a mentor called a Thrive Buddy who helps Thrive Interns easily navigate their transition from a learner to professional by solving topics like:
- Professional Networking.
- Time management.
- Collaboration and communication.
